When cutting flowers
Always use a sharp knife or shears. The shears should be very sharp so that they do crush the stems. Crushing the stem will damage the tissue preventing it from soaking water. A very sharp knife is best. Red roses are best to cut when the second layer of the petals begin to bloom. Than, cut between the stem joints at an angle. However, cutting may also depend on a particular flower.

Flowers like daisies are cut when they are half to fully open. Tulips are best cut from a bud to just about half open. Make sure that the cut stems don’t reach the bottom of the vase. Always try to place your fresh cut flowers in a container such as a vase. Just make sure that the vase and the water are clean.

Impurities and bacteria are culprits to the fast deterioration of flowers. Try to change the water every day and if it’s possible cut the stems a bit shorter to expose a healthy stem for better water absorption. A cut of 1 to 2 inches will be fine. Keep fresh flowers in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Any source of heat will affect the bloom and life off freshly cut flowers.

How about roses

If your roses do not arrive in water, you need to cut off about an inch from the bottom of the stems. With roses, you need to use a different technique. The cutting of the stems for roses need to be cut underwater says gardening expert Mary Robson. “You hold the roses under water and you hold the scissors under water and you cut them off under water,” she explains, “which keeps them from getting an air bubble in the stem that might cause the heads to droop.” You can do this in the sink or fill up a big bowl of water. As soon as you’re done cutting the roses put them right in the vase.

If the heads of the roses are already hanging down, “like it has a bad case of the flu,” there is a trick that sometimes works. Fill the sink with a few inches of warm water and stick the entire rose under water. This is an extreme measure, but Robson says, “Sometimes the whole rose will re-hydrate and the heads will stand up again.” Depending on the conditions, fresh flowers can last for a couple of days to a week. Keep your roses and flowers away from fans so they don't dry up fast.
